Stand for Music -- Sistema NB’s Music Stand Drive

Sistema New Brunswick in need of music stands donations

”If you have a music stand in the back of your closet collecting dust, or maybe one that hasn't been used in years, or is brand new and needs a home, please consider donating it to Sistema New Brunswick,” said NBYO President Ken MacLeod.

Sistema NB, a program of the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra, is a free, not-for-profit, intensive after school orchestral music program that fosters discipline, cooperation, confidence and hope for hundreds of young children who otherwise would not have the opportunity.  Children must make a commitment to attend the after-school classes five days a week as well as to play in the children’s orchestra.

With COVID-19 and social distancing, the Sistema NB Teaching Artists immediately transitioned to an online learning program for the students, including individual lessons, group instrument sectionals, composition classes, and more. Sistema NB quickly realized that children feel even more isolated during this time and immediately engaged their team to provide students with an important link to their music teachers and friends. Working remotely and following all safety precautions, the team of 58 Teaching Artists, in the 10 Sistema NB Centres throughout the province, continues to ensure the students and their families have the community connections, support, and educational opportunities they need.

“We are so pleased to see our students continuing their music lessons from home,” said Antonio Delgado, Conductor and Music Director of NBYO and Sistema NB. “The one thing they need now is a proper music stand. Many students are using their beds and windows to hold their music sheets or even the fridge” said Delgado. “People have been so generous in the past during our music instrument drives, we thought we would ask for music stands this time.”

The music stand drive will be held from May 18-31, 2020.  Music stands will be picked-up by the Sistema NB and NBYO teams in their respective communities.
