The Saint John Youth Orchestra (SJYO) is one of three regional youth orchestras in our province, along with the Moncton Youth Orchestra and the Miramichi Youth String Orchestra, these orchestras represent the highest level of excellence in the Sistema NB program.  The SJYO is located in the Sistema NB John Centre at the Millidgeville North School. Under the expert guidance of Dr. César Suárez, the SJYO provides dedicated young musicians with a unique opportunity to deepen their musical skills, experience the joy of orchestral performance, and connect with a community of like-minded peers.

Rehearsing twice weekly on Tuesday and Friday evenings, the SJYO offers an immersive musical environment where students hone their craft both as individuals and as ensemble players. Members participate in full orchestra rehearsals and instrument-specific classes, allowing for a well-rounded approach to their musical development. The faculty, composed of experienced and passionate educators, works closely with students to nurture their technical abilities and artistic expression.

The SJYO proudly presents three to four MainStage concerts each season, showcasing a diverse repertoire that challenges and inspires its members. Additional performance opportunities often arise, giving students further chances to shine in front of live audiences and share their music with the broader community.

Admission to the SJYO is by audition, held each spring (May–June), and is open to students who demonstrate the requisite level of proficiency and commitment. While there is no participation fee, all members are required to be enrolled in private lessons on their instrument, ensuring continuous growth and readiness for the ensemble’s advanced repertoire.

Whether performing on stage or perfecting their craft in rehearsal, SJYO members are part of a vibrant musical tradition that fosters excellence, collaboration, and a lifelong love of music.
